Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has drawn the attention of the research community in the past few years. This growing interest can be largely credited to new applications enabled by large-scale networks. Most deployed wireless sensor networks measure scalar data such as temperature, pressure, humidity, or the location of objects. On a general note, most of the applications have low bandwidth demands and are usually delay tolerant. While the traditional wireless sensor networks consist of low-bandwidth sensors with limited capabilities, camera sensor networks can provide visual verification, in-depth situational awareness, recognition, and other capabilities.

In recent years, wireless sensor networks have inspired tremendous research interest in diverse application fields such as structural health monitoring, environmental monitoring, and military and security surveillance. A typical wireless sensor network consists of sensor nodes, each equipped with various kinds of sensors, deployed over a geographical region of interest. Most of the applications are centered towards harvesting information from the physical environment, performing a simple processing on the extracted data and transmitting it to remote locations.

A new direction in wireless sensor network application design centers on the idea of enabling the network to learn the behavior of the trend in the environment rather than merely making measurements and reporting about a single event or information of interest. A Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) is defined as a network of wireless embedded devices that allow retrieving video or audio streams, still images, and scalar sensor data.


Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) mainly deals with scalar data such as temperature, humidity, and light which are very suitable for low rate and low power. The commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) CMOS camera has fostered researchers to push WSN a step further. The unique properties of multimedia data delivery pose fresh challenges for resource constrained sensor networks. Transmitting raw data is very costly while limited processing power prevents sophisticated multimedia processing at the sensor nodes.
Wireless sensor networks offer an attractive choice for low cost solutions for transmitting data wireless to a database to be evaluated.

Wireless networks of visual sensors have recently emerged as a new type of sensor-based intelligence system. The goal of the visual sensor network is to provide a user with visual information from an arbitrary viewpoint within the monitored field.

Research says that wireless networks in combination with image sensors open up a multitude of previously unthinkable sensing applications. In an on-going project, we are designing and implementing a sensor node with a camera which would be capable of acquiring still images, transfer the data onto a personal computer through wireless communication, and store the image on a personal computer.

The Markers of DAS

DAS installations are pretty expensive. Hence to justify this investment, providers and carriers prefer long contract terms, with ten years quickly becoming the industry standard. In a carrier-owned DAS, a wireless service provider pays for the equipment and installation costs, as well as maintenance and upgrades. In return, the service is typically exclusive to the carrier that installed the DAS. When a third-party neutral-host provider installs a DAS, this entity bears all of the costs, which can be recouped by charging any or all of the service providers to have access to the system.
Within the United States, Corning Mobile Access, CommScope, and TE Connectivity all serve as DAS hardware vendors. Other manufacturers include Axell Wireless, Comba, Ericsson, Kathrein-Werke, NSN, Optiway, PowerWave Technologies, Solid, and Zinwave. In the world of cellular service providers, AT&T has a large and growing, albeit not exclusive DAS practice.
CommScope offers outdoor wireless solutions, such as the Andrew DAS, which supports all current system architecture and power ranges and is ready to handle more advanced technologies like high-speed packet access (HSPA+) and evolution-data optimized (EV-DO).
FlexWave Prism manufactured by TE is also designed for outdoor use. The package offers mobile operators a way to extend macro network coverage for 2G, 3G, and 4G services. TE’s indoor product is called the FlexWave Spectrum, which can extend wireless services throughout a building, multiple buildings, or a campus.
TE also has a product geared specifically toward enhancing public safety. The appropriately titled TE Public Safety DAS provides distortion-free transmission and distribution of information. It has been used worldwide to improve vital communications in systems for first responders, government, transit, commercial enterprises, education, security personnel, and the military. It functions both indoors and out.
Corning MobileAccess
Corning MobileAccess DAS solutions include the single operator MobileAccess 1000 and the multi-operator MobileAccess 2000. Both are designed for indoor use and have a single, broadband infrastructure with service-specific, chassis-based modules that automatically groom wireless signals. The 1000 model hosts up to four wireless services in medium-to-large-scale environments; whereas, the 2000 model’s modularity enables users to introduce new wireless or operator services at any time and is suitable for large-scale, multi-operator facilities.

Like Corning, SOLiD has two flagship DAS products that differ mostly by scale and capacity. The cost-effective EXPRESS single-carrier DAS provides in-building or outdoor wireless service for a single wireless provider across multiple frequency bands. It typically uses just one fiber to connect a building. The alliance DAS system seems to be much of the same, designed as a multi-carrier solution, and presumably a less cost-effective one at that.
Oberon Wireless
The manufacturers listed so far sell complete Distributed Antenna Systems, Oberon Wireless seems to distinguish itself by selling system components. Its WiFi and DAS antennas come in indoor/outdoor varieties, with a variety of frequency bands to choose from. Some models are dual band, coming in either puck or dome styles. This company also sells the mounting brackets required for installation.

In this case you should use an omni-directional external Dual-Band antenna and a directional inside Dual-Band antenna. This allows you to pick up the signal and use a powerful cellular amplifier and direct the inside signal away from the external antenna.

Higher strength means that on-center distances can be wider in warehouse buildings reducing the amount of material and labor required – thus reducing costs.
